What kind of horse did cowboys actually use for working cows? Would your hero really ride a stallion? How would your character go about breaking a horse? What does it feel like to gallop on a horse, or to fall from one? How does a lady properly ride sidesaddle? If you write historical or contemporary fiction, this guide can help you write about horses and horsemanship with confidence while boosting your word count with detailed description that puts your reader in the saddle. Drawing on her skill as both a lifelong equestrian and a writer and editor, Victoria Rouch uses diagrams and clear, conversational writing to answer any questions you may have about writing horses into your story while avoiding Hollywood horse stereotypes that lead to mistakes in your book. There are even writing prompts included for both plots and scenes to get you started, or to enrich your work in progress.

This is an encyclopedia of horse information explained clearly and concisely. I had no idea there was so much to know! Ever wonder what kind of horse pulls that Budweiser wagon? It's in there. Ever wonder how many inches are in a hand? It's in there. Ever wonder what the hell a 'hand' is in horse language? It's in there. For horse dummies like me, this is a must read.

Horse Writer The Definitive Guide to Accurately Depicting Horsemanship in Your Novel or Story Victoria Rouch 9781520522593 Books Reviews

As a aspiring author myself, and always on the look out for new ways to carry over the written word to imagnation scape where stories are born, I found this work to be both educational and essential for any writing featuring riding or horses generally.
Written with obvious first hand experience and insight, those of us without the luck to have been near and worked with horses can now better accurately present them. I whole heartedly claim this as a valuable writing tool and stand by its usefulness
This is a must have for any author writing about but without firsthand knowledge of horses. It is obvious the author is knowledgeable about horses and the equipment associated with them. It is well written and easy to follow. I will definitely consider this a valuable resource tool.
As a horse woman, there is nothing worse for me than reading a book with horses in the plot and the information in the book is not correct. Seriously, it drives me crazy, not the horses because I love them ;) So, I think this book is a wonderful resource to any authors who are unsure, don't know or don't have anyone to ask. How can you go wrong with the right information ) I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and I am voluntarily leaving my own honest review.
Who hasn’t shaken their head in amused scorn at the silly mistakes in our own areas of expertise that so often creep into books and movies? Whether it’s an inedible apple pie recipe, a mechanic who can’t drive stick, or experienced horse people making elemental equestrian errors, a single short scene can ruin the moment for the reader and cause them to discard an otherwise excellent book. Luckily, a little research can go a long way to protect authors from embarrassment.

In “Horse and Writer,” writer and horsewoman Victoria Rouch gives a clear and simple explanation of the kinds of things writers who want to include horses in their works should know. The book is compact and quick to read, but contains an introduction to different breeds, different riding styles and the tack and attire that goes with them, basic riding knowledge and what it feels like to ride (and to fall off!), and horse care and veterinary treatment.

While far from exhaustive, this is an excellent introduction to the world of horses and equestrianism for writers who want to learn more and may not know where to begin. Each chapter will get the reader started in the right direction, and there are links within the book to more detailed sources of information for each topic for those who want to expand their knowledge further. There is also a quiz and writing prompts for those who want to put their new information to the test. Never fear, however this is not written in a dry textbook style, but is conversational and engaging, as well as informative. As a former horsewoman and riding instructor myself, I found myself enjoying the ride and nodding along as I encountered familiar point after familiar point. A very helpful first stop for non-horsey authors who want to include horses in their books.

My thanks to the author for providing a review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This is definitely a valuable resource that I have been looking for, for quite some time. As a writer, I spend most of my time hunched over my laptop either writing (or pretending to write, but really watching youtube as I try and get past writer's block) or reading..................or I'm watching Netflix while I'm supposed to be writing. That doesn't leave much time for other things....like sleep or exercising or cultivating other interests that would help my writing i.e. depicting horseback riding heroines or heroes.

This guide contains a definitive guide on

**** Horse Anatomy and their common Illnesses (I know the face that has the bridle and bit that is under its teeth; the legs, which always struck me as kind of spindly for such a big animal, but what do I know about anatomy?; and the back.......which contains its tail)

****Food and Maintenance (For all I know, a horse sleeps in straw? in a stall and eats what looks like dried corn)

****Different types of horses (There's more than a stallion and mare? LOL. But it definitely helps with writing, as I want to portray a particularly strong heroine who seems like a Mary Sue until you see what kind of horse she rides)

*****Equipment/Saddle Types and who would ride them (especially good for me, as I knew women in a certain era rode side saddle and that was about it)

******How to portray horseback riding (which is especially helpful as before this, I could only say--"Her horse galloped/She rode her horse/The horse halted...."

There are a some other things covered--including writing prompts as well--but this is so helpful, as the type of horse or manner of riding, etc will help the writer to inform the reader more to the character--and show a hidden side.

Happy writing!
